How a school in its first year of operation earned one of the most distinguished recognitions in educational technology
When Lumio Private School opened its doors in September 2024, they didn’t just set out to build a school, they set out to redefine what modern learning looks like in the region. In less than two years of operation, that vision has moved from blueprint to global benchmark.
Today, we are proud to announce that Lumio Private School has been officially approved as a Google for Education Premier Reference School, the first school in Greece and Cyprus to join the Google for Education Reference Program.
What the Recognition Means
The Google for Education Reference Program is invitation-only. Schools cannot apply independently; they must be nominated by a Google for Education partner based on demonstrated, system-wide adoption of Google technologies, a strong commitment to professional development, and measurable educational impact.
While many institutions achieve Reference School status, the premier designation is reserved for a select group of global leaders who have demonstrated the highest level of innovation and system-wide maturity.
Gear Education nominated Lumio on the strength of the implementation we built together from day one. The application itself was rigorous. Over several months, Lumio developed a comprehensive impact study documenting how Chromebooks and Google Class Tools had transformed teaching and learning across the school.
This included documented evidence of operational maturity, governance structures, and educator development, alongside a 3-to-5-minute impact narrative video offering a visual tour of Lumio’s learning environment, featuring the perspectives of its leadership team, teachers, and students. That video tells the story better than any summary can.
How We Got Here
The journey began with the school’s founding in 2024, where Gear Education worked alongside Lumio to configure the ecosystem from the ground up. That early discipline provided the launchpad for the milestones achieved throughout 2025, ultimately leading to this Premier designation today.
We focused on domain architecture, user roles, oversight, and security settings, all designed with growth in mind. The system had to become stable before it became visible.
What followed was a regional first. The only school in Greece and Cyprus running a full 1-to-1 Chromebook programme across multiple grade levels, with every device integrated into a unified Google ecosystem from day one.
The impact was immediate across the school. For students, the devices opened up new creative possibilities:

For IT, the shift was equally transformative. Chrome Education Upgrade and the Google Admin Console centralised device management across the entire fleet:

In the classroom, Google Class Tools gave teachers real-time control to push content to screens, lock devices for focused work, and deliver live captions and translations, all without stepping outside the environment students already use.
