A Look Inside The English School’s Purposeful Digital Transformation
A historic academic institution surrounded by nature’s green in the heart of Nicosia, Cyprus, by the Presidential Palace, rooted in a legacy of academic excellence and tradition, sought to transform and adapt to today’s requirements for success.
This is The English School, a name that carries weight. A school that has long served as a springboard for youth to seek out their passions and callings, with alumni who’ve gone on to Ivy League institutions, Oxford, Cambridge, and much more.
Its educators and leadership have long recognised that preparing students for tomorrow requires transformation, and that transformation only takes root when it’s grounded in careful decision-making and a long-term vision.
A School That Chose to Look Ahead
In October 2022, The English School invited Gear Education in for consultation. Just one month after Gear Education launched, The English School became one of our very first clients, an honour and responsibility we approached with both precision and purpose.
Rather than resting on its reputation, the leadership team at The English School chose to examine their technological landscape with clear eyes. What they found was a growing disconnect. Their infrastructure had served them well, but it no longer aligned with how their teachers taught, or how their students learned.
Common hurdles across academic institutions include outdated hardware, inconsistent user experiences, and limited teacher mobility, which are actually more than technical issues. They can affect the rhythm of classroom life. Teachers often find themselves fixed behind desks, struggling to manage tools while losing connection with their students. Feedback cycles tend to be slow and collaboration can be strained. For The English School, they actively sought for a change.
Meeting Complexity with Clarity
The path to digital transformation is never one-size-fits-all. Gear Education approached the project not with pre-packed solutions but with careful discovery. We spent time listening, to the educators, to the IT team, to the board, and to the school’s academic leadership.
We guided The English School through a structured decision-making process: piloting tools in real classrooms, identifying pain points across departments, and evaluating what systems would offer long-term value. As part of this process, we worked closely with the school’s Chief Financial Officer, ICT Manager, and Assistant Head – Digital Literacy lead, a leadership trio that remained closely involved at every stage.
Around them, department heads became key implementers, translating strategic choices into classroom realities. The Head of School and Board of Management was regularly informed and actively engaged in discussions around progress and direction, reinforcing that this transformation had backing at every level.
To support these decisions, a preliminary survey was developed by Gear Education and disseminated by The English School to assess what teachers believed would best support their teaching and student engagement. Based on the survey, 75% of teachers anticipated improved mobility and teaching flexibility, while 60% expected more dynamic, interactive learning experiences for their students.
Transformation Through Technology of The Right Kind
The rollout began with a clear goal: give teachers the tools to teach the way they think, write, and move. With the launch of a 1:1 iPad program, every teacher received an iPad and stylus. The setup turned what was once a static notebook into something more alive, an interactive canvas projected to their newly installed interactive smartboards. Teachers could write freely, annotate directly, and walk through their lessons without needing to sit behind a desk or manage cables.
Microsoft Office 365 was already part of the school’s daily workflow. The addition of Apple devices introduced no disruption. Teachers moved smoothly between apps and platforms, planning in one place and presenting in another, without needing to change habits.
Alongside classroom upgrades, the school carried out a structured needs analysis for its Management Information System (MIS). Accurately implementing the process involved meetings focused on understanding what staff, students, and families needed from a system that supports everything from enrollment to reporting.
Device management was handled through Jamf. With over 150 iPads in circulation, the school needed a system that could maintain consistency, ensure security, and allow updates without disrupting the teaching day.
Vision Takes Time
For schools in Cyprus, the pace of change comes with added complexity. Unlike institutions abroad that have grown up alongside evolving technologies, many local schools are expected to meet modern standards while starting from further behind and often, with tighter budgets.
And despite the constraints, they didn’t settle. They set the bar higher and committed to seeing it through.
This was Gear Education’s first consulting project to this magnitude in Cyprus, and it set the tone for everything that followed. The English School asked for more than educational technology transformation, they asked for partnership. They welcomed thoughtful feedback, made space for experimentation, and leaned into the challenges with grit.
As part of their partnership with Gear Education, The English School will also benefit from Apple Professional Learning guidance through Christina Shailas who has since become the first Apple Professional Learning Specialist (APLS) for Greece and Cyprus. Through tailored training, coaching, and workshops, she will help ensure the school’s educators unlock the full potential of iPad in the classroom, supporting device adoption for the kind of connected, creative, collaborative, and personal learning Apple advocates.
What they’ve built is more than a solution. It’s a foundation for the next decade of learning and a benchmark for what’s possible when a school commits to change with its eyes open, its team aligned, and its goals clearly set.
The future of academia in Cyprus is being built there every day, one meaningful decision at a time.
